Get your OKRs started on the right foot

Getting started with OKRs can feel like a lot to unpack. That's why we recommend a collaborative process involving key players across your organisation. Here's a typical approach :

1. Assemble your OKR Leadership Team:

This group will define your ground rules for using OKRs effectively. Typically, it includes:

  • Your Coach (That's Us!): We'll guide you through the process.

  • Executive Sponsor: A high-level champion for OKRs (CEO, Division Head, etc.).

  • OKR Project Lead: An internal point person overseeing the initiative.

  • OKR Coordinator: Manages the day-to-day logistics of OKRs.

  • HR Representative: Ensures alignment with HR policies.

2. Define your OKR Framework:

Together, you'll answer key questions about how OKRs will function in your company:

  • Target Level: Will OKRs apply company-wide, selected departments, or just to individual teams?

  • Number of OKRs: Focus on a manageable number of high-level objectives and keep key results specific (typically 2-4 per objective).

  • Scoring: Choose a method to track progress that best suits your organisation (binary, percentage, etc.).

  • Cycle Length: Quarterly cycles are common, but consider shorter or longer options based on your needs.

  • Key Result Structure: Will you use metrics, baselines, milestones, or a combination?

  • Technology: Select an OKR tracking system accessible to everyone involved. We can help you find the right fit.

  • OKRs vs. KPIs: While some Key Results may resemble KPIs, they serve different purposes. We'll clarify the distinction.

  • Alignment: Ensure OKRs work together and support your overall company goals. However, avoid simply cascading objectives down – encourage bottom-up input for key results.

  • Team Involvement: Team members should be involved in defining key results to leverage their expertise and build ownership.

3. Fine tune your Implementation Plan:

Once your OKR framework is defined, we can help you fine tune your OKR implementation plan by putting together a staged timetable of key activities before and after go-live.

This initial planning sets the stage for successful OKR implementation. We'll be here every step of the way to guide you through the process.
